Background:Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It is commonly used in the treatment of various bacterial infections such as respiratory, skin, and urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases, and infectious mononucleosis (mononucleosis). This study was designed to explore the clinical and pharmacological efficacy of ciprofloxacin in the treatment of the following conditions:
Methods:A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted with the patients (n=9) who had received oral ciprofloxacin therapy for the treatment of acute bacterial sinusitis (AS) and the control condition received standard care. The treatment regimen was determined by a physician based on clinical judgment and results of adverse reactions. Inclusion criteria were patients who had a complete medical record, were able to understand the treatment and provide written informed consent. Patients were randomly assigned to either the ciprofloxacin group or the placebo group. The primary efficacy endpoint was the change in clinical score on the International Index of Erectile Function-FDA-Efficacy-Improvement-Duration (IEFI-D) questionnaire.
Results:The mean age at study entry was 39.8±5.1 years and mean duration of therapy was 3.5±2.9 days. The mean number of lesions per lesion was 11.4±0.6. The mean duration of treatment was 19.2±7.4 days. The percentage of patients who received ciprofloxacin were 88.5±10.8%. The percentage of ciprofloxacin responders was 44.2% and in ciprofloxacin non-responders was 42.9%. There were no significant differences between the two groups in the mean percentage of adverse events.
Conclusions:Ciprofloxacin demonstrated better efficacy in the treatment of AS compared to standard care and it is important to consider the treatment strategy as well as patient selection for this treatment regimen. However, these results need to be validated in a larger number of patients. More studies with larger sample size are needed to confirm these results.
